SVA Residency 2019

A peek at my time and a selection of works at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where I completed a residency in Illustration & Visual Storytelling

My first day!

Our class was made up of nine illustrators, all so talented and unique with their own illustration style.

We were asked to share our very own Subway Story; something that was very memorable to us. Mine was the subway Rush Hour:

Every weekday mornings, I get on the F or M subway line at 9:00 AM for my 10:00 AM class. My favorite part about it would be observing the mundane things that people do as they wait for their stop. Many would be in their sunglasses while they take sips from their cup of coffee. A good number of them would be on their phones reading a business article or scrolling through their Instagram feed (not that I was staring). Some of them would be at a corner just enjoying a bagel or a good slice of pizza for breakfast. And there are also those who are just mad—bothered by the little space they have to fit themselves in during rush hour. These people are the ones that make me laugh the most.

For our class’ Subway Stories zine.

For our Open Studio exhibit—and with the approval and guidance of our instructor—I made a series of posters to showcase the food or beverage closely associated with each neighborhood in Manhattan.

The idea came from my love for illustrating food and people. Generally, I was inspired by the work of Leonetto Capiello, my favorite poster designer. His posters feature the use of bold colors and figures against a black background.

And to conclude my residency at SVA, I illustrated a comic showing my love for bagels.
